Leaves: Leaves compound (even-pinnate). Alternate, leaflets numerous, opposite. Leaflets rachis ending as a short bristle. Leaflet margins entire. Petiolate. Stipules small, usually persistent.

Flowers: Flowers often secund–fasciculate on a short thickened axis, arranged in axillary or terminal pseudoracemes, bracts and bracteoles short. Flowers bisexual (perfect), papilionaceous. Calyx subtruncate or with 5 short teeth, the upper 2 weakly connate. Corolla yellow to purple or white, standard ovate to orbicular, wings long–clawed. Stamens 9, connate into a tube split at apex and shortly adnate to petals at base, the upper stamen absent. Ovary superior, subsessile; ovules numerous; style short.

Fruit: Pods oblong or linear; compressed or inflated; elastically dehiscent; weakly septate between the seeds. Seeds glossy; sometimes bright red and black; subglobose or ellipsoid.
